[2026 100 Therapists Interview] Director Hyunju Kim, Hyeonju Yoga & Meditation Center (Changwon–Masan)

¡°Even after the resonance fades, the body remembers.¡±

Q. Please introduce yourself. How did yoga and singing bowls come together in your work?

A. I¡¯m Hyunju Kim, and I run Hyeonju Yoga & Meditation Center in Changwon–Masan. After more than 20 years of practicing and teaching yoga, I¡¯ve come to realize that what truly changes a person isn¡¯t ¡°strong stimulation,¡± but the gentle return of sensation. I traveled to India twice to study yoga more deeply, and I¡¯ve continued to teach teacher-training and meditation classes grounded in classical yoga philosophy. Along the way, I encountered a language of healing that the body recognizes first—sound and vibration. Singing bowls became a core pillar of my work.

Q. What does a typical day look like? We¡¯re curious about ¡°a therapist¡¯s day.¡±

A. My morning always begins with the breath. Before I open the studio, I take even a brief moment to settle my own rhythm first. Then the day flows into consultations and condition checks, group classes and private sessions, and reviewing our training programs. On days when I offer singing bowl sessions, I prepare the space differently from the ground up—the lighting, temperature, the feel of the floor, even small background noises. It might look like ¡°minor attention¡± to someone else, but I know this: healing begins in the details.

Q. Why did hands-on singing bowl therapy feel so special to you?

A. The power of singing bowls is closer to experience than explanation. Many people can¡¯t decide to relax through thought alone. But sound and vibration arrive in the body faster than words. When resonance spreads, there are moments when muscles release on their own, breath deepens, and the mind becomes quiet. I witness it often:

¡°Teacher, something just settled inside me.¡±

¡°It¡¯s been so long since my thoughts stopped.¡±

Singing bowls don¡¯t force change. They simply open a way for the body to remember its original balance. I find that process deeply beautiful.

Q. Who tends to benefit most from singing bowl therapy?

A. People who have lived in tension and hyperarousal for a long time, those whose sleep has become shallow, and those who ¡°want to rest but can¡¯t.¡± The body signals that it needs rest, yet the mind keeps running; emotions become sensitive, and even small stimulation leads to fatigue. In those states, singing bowls—combined with breath—can become a gentle pathway to stabilize the nervous system. I tailor each session by adjusting the bowl size, rhythm, intensity, and length of sound. When needed, I also design sessions that integrate yoga pranayama, deep relaxation, and meditation.

Q. This is also something media outlets ask about: How do you incorporate a ¡°scientific approach,¡± including neurofeedback?

A. I don¡¯t want to treat healing as something purely emotional. That¡¯s why I value objective indicators that help us check changes in the body before and after sessions. From a neurofeedback perspective, for example, we can reference shifts in brain arousal and whether relaxation is actually occurring. Singing bowls are highly sensory tools, but I want that sensation to translate into real, lasting change. When embodied experience and data move together, people tend to recover more safely—and for longer.

Q. If you could express the core philosophy of your work in one sentence, what would it be?

A. ¡°Even after the resonance fades, the body remembers.¡±

Even after the sound stops, a gentle wave remains inside. That wave lengthens the breath, lets the shoulders drop, and guides the mind toward softness. I believe in that ¡°remaining resonance.¡± Yoga speaks through movement, meditation through awareness, and singing bowls through vibration—different languages, but all heading toward the same place: the path of returning to oneself.

Q. What are your goals going forward?

A. I hope that in Changwon–Masan, yoga, meditation, and singing bowl therapy will become not ¡°healing for a special few,¡± but a recovery skill anyone can draw on in daily life. I will continue to verify, record, and refine what works in the field—so that someone¡¯s day feels a little less heavy, and their night becomes a little more restful.
